Our Work For Justice
Our commitment to the Jewish prophetic tradition is profound. This tradition urges us to refuse to be satisfied and obligates us to improve the world in which we find ourselves. We support and act in common cause with those who pursue justice, peace and fairness here and around the world. Jewish codes of ethical conduct are our guide and we seek to conduct ourselves accordingly, via tzedakah (giving for justice), tikkun olam (active repair of the world), and gemilut hasadim (acts of loving-kindness). -- Kolot Chayeinu Values Statement
The role of the Eitz Kehillah Social Justice Facilitation Committee is to nurture and coordinate the expansion of social justice work at Kolot: quite literally, to be the "gathering tree" under which many social justice projects can blossom.
Brooklyn Congregations United (BCU)
Kolot Chayeinu joined BCU when it was Community Action Project, a group that merged with Southwest Brooklyn Congregations to form BCU. BCU is a space where Kolot members work together with a diverse set of congregations of different faiths and ethnic heritage to share in a collective voice at the city and national levels around the issues that unite us.
Children of Abraham Peace Walk
Founded in 2003 by Rabbi Lippmann, the Rev. Tom Martinez, and Debbie Almontaser, this annual event promotes the message that Jews, Christians, Muslims and others of good will can come together in peace.
Bnai Mitzvah Tzedukah Projects
Every Bat and Bar Mitzvah in our two-year program must complete a project that demonstrates that h or she has taken his or her place in the Jewish community by assuming some adult responsibilities and communal obligations.
Eleven Kolot Chayeinu members joined in supporting the first Respite Shelter for homeless men held by Old First Congregational Church this summer.
Rabbi Lippmann, Cantor Segal and many Kolot members have been active in Occupy Judaism, teaching and praying at the sukkah and other services.
