Kolot Family Scrapbook
(Assigned Sep 26, Due November 7)
You are invited to work together as a family to create an 8 ½ x 11 size page for our Kolot Family Scrapbook! You can use a variety of materials (photos, maps, drawings, images, words, pictures) to share with the rest of our community what being Jewish means in your family and how Kolot fits into your lives.
You can and should take this in whatever direction feels important and exciting for your entire family to work together on...
Here are some guiding questions to get you started. Feel free to ask and answer your own too!
- Who are some of the Jewish people in our family?
- Are there important Jewish traditions in our home?
- What other cultures or traditions are important in our family?
- What does belonging to Kolot look like for our family? Why are we here?
We will compile these pages into a physical book which will be on display in the office at Kolot. Additionally, we hope to make digital images of these pages and have a slide show viewing at our Shabbat Siyyum on June 2 and to make it available to view on the website.
Jewish Media Chanukkah Gift
(Assigned Nov 7, Due December 5)
This assignment has double impact! In doing the project, your family gets the gift of learning more about Jewish culture together in a fun way and by donating the book/cd/DVD to Kolot’s resource library after you’ve finished your project, the whole community receives more knowledge and tools for education.
As a family, choose either a book, music album (CD), or movie (DVD) to explore together. Once you have done this, write up a short “review” of the item and bring both the book/cd/DVD and the written assignment to school on December 5th. At the CLP Havdalah Program on March 17, we will have these available for you to see what other families chose and get ideas about what other Jewish media is out there.
Here are questions to guide your choice:
- What makes a book, music, or film “Jewish”?
- What are parts of Jewish heritage that we want to know more about or explore deeper? Ideas of God? History? Different Jewish cultures around the world?
- What are important stories in our family that we want the rest of Kolot to experience too?
We are eager for families to explore traditional and contemporary Jewish art in the literary, music, and film genres. You can pick something with a Jewish theme as well as choosing a Jewish artist.
Shabbat through the Shanah
(assigned Oct 3, Check in due March 28, Final Project Due May 7)
Shabbat is a special Jewish time once a week where we pause...have a rest, and enjoy the simplicity of being still and being together. This day of rest- not creating or destroying anything and just letting the Earth and ourselves BE- comes from Breishit- the story of creation in our Torah. In the story, God creates the universe over 6 days and on the 7th day, God rested. So too do humans, animals, and plants need built in time to rest regularly.
We want to know more about what your family traditions are while providing an opportunity to explore some new ones and share with the other CLP families. Below is a list of the minimum requirements for this assignment. We hope you feel inspired to add to this list and then tell us all about your experiences. This is meant to be completed throughout the entire year, allowing for a natural progression and evolution of your family's Shabbat experience.
Shabbat Through the Shana (year):
- Enjoy Friday night dinner twice (once as family, once with others)
- Attend a Saturday morning service Kolot
- Attend a Friday night Kabbalat Shabbat service at Kolot
- Attend our CLP Havdalah program
- Visit a community/shul outside of Kolot (for either services or an event)
As a family, for each ritual or event, complete the reflection page we will provide in the booklets we’ll give you.
Remember- you have ALL the shanah to explore this project!
Your booklets will be on display at our end of year Shabbat Siyyum on June 2 and then you’ll be able to take them back home with you.
